Courtney Klaas - Ohio Co.

1)   What is your earliest memory about playing soccer?
Whenever I was 6 years old and I didn't want to play soccer when my mom asked, but on the first gave day I watched my sister and brother play and I decided I wanted to play.  It was ten minutes before my age group's first game kick off and they gave me a jersey to put over my shirt, then sent me straight onto the field.  I never looked back!

2)  Why is soccer one of your favorite sports?
It's a quick-paced, physical game of skill and strategy.  It continually challenges me.

3)  Talk about some of your favorite players (college/pro).
I have many favorites, but the one's I look up to the most are from Ohio County because I know them as people, not just athletes.  People like Kristen Chinn and Erin Adams are not just great players, but good role models as well
.

4)  What teams will you play for in 2009-2010?
Ohio County High School Lady Eagles and, (hopefully), Owensboro United Indoor and Select teams.

5)  What position do you see yourself playing this year?
Midfield (left or center), Striker (either wing), and anywhere else I'm needed.

6)  What is your favorite goal scoring celebration?
Scoring a goal on Marshall County by bending a corner kick into the net.

7)  What college are you interested in playing for in the coming years?
Right now I'm looking at Eastern or Morehead.  Soccer is very important to me, but so is my education.  I'm seeking a degree in Avionics and want to find a school that can offer both opportunities.

Leslie Chinn - Ohio Co.

What is your earliest memory about playing soccer?
Playing with the Bengals (a U-6 girls recreational team) and getting my
first soccer uniform.  More importantly, I was extremely excited when we got
our first matching team bags because all the "good" teams already had them.
We weren't that good, but we looked awesome!

Why is soccer one of your favorite sports?
It has been a big part of my entire families' life.  Both of my older
sisters played, my dad coaches and my mom drives the taxi.  Also, you can be
very creative and there is not a set way to play. It is a players sport. The
game is always exciting!

Talk about some of your favorite players (college / pro)
Wayne Rooney from Manchester United is my favorite player to watch.  He
plays with such heart and passion.

What teams will you play for in 2009-2010?
Ohio County High School, Owensboro United U-18 girls, OCASA Rage U-18 and
anybody else that wants me to play on their team as a guest player

What position do you see yourself playing this year?
I really want to play center mid and/or attacking forward.  I feel that I
can best help my team in these positions.

What is your favorite goal scoring celebration?
My 2 goals against West Jessamine last year were 2 of my favorite ones.
Sometimes, after I score I give a special sign to my pops.

What colleges are you interested in playing for in the coming years?
Western KY University, Murray State, University of KY, Transylvania, and
Indy; but I am open to any college that will allow me to play soccer and
provide some financial assistance.  And, of course, if Anson Dorrance calls
me then I will most definitely go to North Carolina!!

Jack Goblirsch - Senior - Elizabethtown

E'town High School and Javanon 92’ for club

What position do you see yourself playing this year?
Center mid in high school, forward for club

What is your favorite goal scoring celebration?
Some times random African guys dance around.. that’s pretty cool

What colleges are you interested in playing soccer for next year?
I have looked at a few in state schools and some out of state but I’m undecided and keeping my options open.

Abby Kerbaugh - Senior Boyle Co.

What is your earliest memory about playing soccer?
Playing rec-league on a co-ed U-6 team.

Why is soccer one of your favorite sports?
I love the challenge the sport brings, as well as the feeling of overcoming obstacles you would have never imagined you would.

Talk about some of your favorite players (college / pro).
Abby Wambach, she is a power house forward that will stop at nothing.

What teams will you play for in 2009-2010?
I will play for my high school team, Boyle County Lady Rebels, and my select team, Central Kentucky Soccer Club.

What position do you see yourself playing this year?
Sweeper.

What is your favorite goal scoring celebration?
I love when all my team mates run up to me and give me high fives because I'm always in the back and hardly ever get a chance to score.

What colleges are you interested in playing for in the coming years?
Centre College, Bellarmine University, St. Leo University, Transylvania University, or Georgetown College.

Kristan Paynter - Senior - Boyle Co.

My earliest memory about playing soccer is when me, my sister, and my dad would go in the back yard and pass and kick around. It was little fun stuff like that that i remember.

Soccer is my favorite sport because it has such high intensity. I love the fact that there is ten other people on the feild with you, all trying to achieve one goal. Being on a team is the main thing i love about soccer. The social family like atmosphere is such a positive thing to be around, and i suggest young atheletes try the game of soccer.

Two of my favorite soccer idols i look up too are, Mia Hamm (of course) and my sister (Lauren Paynter, number 4 at Belmont University). Mia Hamm is a given, she dominated on the feild and gave young female atheletes something to look up too, whether they played soccer or not. Lauren is one of my favorite soccer players, not only because shes my older sister, but because she has such a driven and dedicated attitude. Any athelete with her drive will be successful.

I will be playing for the Boyle County High School soccer team in the fall, and the Central Kentucky Soccer Club as my select team, in the spring.

I see myself playing center-mid. Thats what i usually play and have been playing for a while so that will probably be what it is.

I love it when someone on the team scores a really big goal in a really big game, and the whole team, bench, fans, everybody goes nuts. Just when everybody is really pumped and celebrating at one exact moment. It's really awsome.

I'm not sure yet. But i have visited several colleges, like, Savannah College of Art and Design, Georgetown College, University of the Cumberlands, etc....I'm still undecided.

Nick Link - Senior - Elizabethtown

What is your earliest memory about playing soccer?
Playing for my rec team in U-6, the white tigers, with my parents as the coaches.

Why is soccer one of your favorite sports?
Because it's a challenging sport and anything can happen during games

Talk about some of your favorite players (college / pro)
Back in his prime, I liked Hernan Crespo, mainly cause in Fifa 06 he always scored all my goals.
Now my favorite player is Clint Dempsey because he represents the states.

What teams will you play for in 2009-2010?
Elizabethtown High School.
Not sure about club yet

What position do you see yourself playing this year?
Mostly sweeper, probably some midfield and forward ac
tion as well.

What is your favorite goal scoring celebration?
Running along the visitor fan's sideline and hushing the crowd in an intense game

What colleges are you interested in playing for next year?

Been looking at Spring Hill College in Mobile, Alabama.
No commitments yet though

Brycen Howard - Junior - South Oldham

What was it like attending Shattuck St. Mary's college prep school?
It was challenging but also a good experience being away from home; like a college student.

How would you rate the level of soccer at St. Mary's including your opponents?
The competition was very high between the players at the school. Some of our opponents were "mens" teams so the competition was at a high level there too.

What is your earliest memory about playing soccer?
When I was little (3) I always would slide when I kicked the ball and everyone would tell me to stay on my feet.

Why is soccer one of your favorite sports?
I love the non-stop action of the game and that it is an internationally played sport.

Talk about some of your favorite players (college, pro, Olympic)
Christiano Ronaldo because you never know what he is going to do and watching him is very entertaining. Messi because he is one of the youngest players and gives everyone hope of becoming a pro soccer player.

What teams will you play for in 2009-2010?
High school is South Oldham High School and then I will play club soccer for the Javanon '92 team.

What position do you see yourself playing this year?
Center mid for both teams.

What is your favorite goal scoring celebration?
One of my SOHS and Javanon teammates and I have a dance that we do when we connect with each other for a goal.

Taylor Borman - Freshman - Scott Co. High School

Taylor scored 6 goals and had 8 assists in four matches as Scott Co. won gold at BGSG 2009....Taylor answers a few questions for Ky Kicks.....

What is your earliest memory about playing soccer?

When my u6 team went undefeated.

Why is soccer one of your favorite sports?

Because it is different from other sports in the fact you use your feet, and it is a lot of fun.

Talk about some of your favorite players (college, pro, Olympic)

Marta – Awesome with the ball, and the best woman player in the world
Casey Nogueira – I have met her and actually played a little with her, very intense and a great player
Lionel Messi – Never quits working and has great ball skills
Christian Ronaldo – Creative and does cool things with the ball
Mia Hamm – She scored a lot of goals but also had even more assists

I really enjoy watching players with creative ball skills who creates scoring chances for their team as well as themselves.

What teams will you play for in 2009-2010?

Scott County Lady Cardinals
1995 Javanon Black
Hopefully KY ODP State team

What position do you see yourself playing this year?

Forward and Midfield

What is your favorite goal scoring celebration?

When my teammates all jump me

What was it like to win the Bluegrass State Games?

Exciting, and a great way to kick off the season!

Mary Beth Gorham - Freshman - Lexington Catholic

Mary Beth scored 5 goals at BGSG 2009

What is your earliest memory about playing soccer?

Playing at U-6 for the Hornets at the small fields on Leestown Rd. My most vivid memory of my early years playing soccer were all the great snacks at half time! I also remember when I was little my brother's coach would always let me practice with his team. It was a lot of fun and made me feel like a real soccer player.

Why is soccer one of your favorite sports?

I like basketball too, but had to choose one or the other for high school and decided I liked Basketball, but I LOVE Soccer! I love soccer so much, because I have played it for so long and it has always seemed to come natural to me. I also grew up watching my brother play the game and therefore always wanted to play like him. (He is a Sr. this year at Lexington Catholic)

Talk about some of your favorite players (college, pro, Olympic)

My 2 favorite players are Mia Hamm and Abbey Wambach. Both players scored a ton of goals. Last year I went to North Carolina's soccer camp and loved Coach Anson Dorrance. He has coached many great players and has built one of the best women's soccer programs.

What teams will you play for in 2009-2010?

I will be a freshman at Lexington Catholic High School this year and for club I will be playing for Javanon '95 this coming Spring. It will be my first year with Javanon and we hope to become a very good team in the Region. My teammates and I are excited to play for a new coach, Jamie Hutchison, who played for Kentucky. I was also on the 1994 ODP State Team this year and plan on trying out again for the next season.

What position do you see yourself playing this year?

Mostly forward, but also some midfield. I am not very big, so midfield is sometimes a struggle for me because I get pushed off the ball easily. I will have to work hard to create space for myself so I can move the ball around.

What is your favorite goal scoring celebration?

My favorite goal scoring celebration is getting a high five from all my teammates as I would jog back to position. I don't like to make a big deal out of making a goal because just knowing that I helped the team succeed is enough celebration.

Layth Masri - Senior - Louisville Collegiate

What is your earliest memory about playing soccer?
My earliest memory of soccer is when I first started playing at the age of
five. My family lived in Saudi Arabia at the time, where there was not
much grass to play on anywhere. We practiced and played our games on
fields of sand and dirt. I played on a team with my older brother and my
Dad was our coach.

Why is soccer one of your favorite sports?
All you need to play soccer is a ball. It is the most popular sport in the
world for that reason and it brings entire nations together. There is a
lot of passion and emotion that goes along with playing the game. It is
such a simple game to play, but it is still difficult to master all the
skills. It's fun to see how you have improved over the years. I believe
soccer is the greatest team sport in the world. Everyone must work
together to accomplish the same goal. When a team scores, it is not just
one player who did all the work. Every player on the field must do their
job for the team to score a goal and it's great to see a team celebrate
together after they have done so.

Talk about some of your favorite players (college, pro, Olympic)
My favorite player is Steven Gerrard, who plays for Liverpool FC. He is a
great leader and captain for his team. Gerrard has great championship
character and he has led his team to many trophies. He can strike a ball
as good as anyone in the world and he has the ability to take over a game
and win it for his team. Another one of my favorite players is Lionel
Messi, who plays for Barcelona FC. He is probably the best player in the
world right now and he is very exciting to watch. He is so quick on the
ball and he creates so many opportunities to score for his team. He scores
a number of great goals, but he also assists his teammates on many goals.

What teams will you play for in 2009-2010?
I play for Louisville Collegiate School in the fall and Javanon SC in the
spring.

What position do you see yourself playing this year?
I will play Center-Midfield for my team.

What is your favorite goal scoring celebration?
I like when the goal scorer runs over to the bench and the entire team
gets involved in the celebration.

Where would you like to play in college?
I have verbally committed to play for Northwestern University.
