Jones signs with JSU
Greenwood standout never wavered from initial college choice

By MICHEAL COMPTON, The Daily News, mcompton@bgdailynews.com
Friday, February 6, 2009 11:45 PM CST

Greenwood soccer player Ariel Jones had plenty of college options, but ultimately she came back to her first choice.

Jones made it official Friday, signing a national letter of intent to play soccer at Jacksonville State in northeast Alabama.

A four-year starter for the Lady Gators, Jones committed to Jacksonville State in April.

“It’s an exciting day,” Jones said. “It’s rare that people get to do this, and it’s been a dream that I have had ever since I was a little kid.”

Jones was a four-time academic all-state selection and a member of three district champions and two state Final Four teams. She scored 12 goals and added six assists for a Greenwood team that finished 19-4-2 last season, advancing to the Final Four.

Jones said the recruiting process was difficult at first, but once she went to Jacksonville State last spring on her first official visit, she knew it was the school for her.

“The town is really pretty,” Jones said. “The coaching staff is really amazing. I got to meet the team about three months ago and they are great. The campus itself isn’t big, it’s medium. That’s what I wanted.

“I was there for 10 minutes and realized that I just love it there.”

Jones said she made visits to three other schools, including Western Carolina, but Jacksonville State remained the front runner.

“I wanted to compare (Jacksonville State) to other visits and it didn’t compare,” Jones said.

Jones also fielded offers from Toledo, Alabama, Austin Peay and Western Kentucky.

She added that it was a relief to commit so early.

“I was able to (focus on my senior) year and not be stressed about if I was going to get to play (college soccer) or not,” Jones said.

While Jones said it will be tough to leave behind her teammates, including younger sister Angelia, she is ready to take the next step in her soccer career.

“I’m excited, but at the same time, I’m nervous because I’m just getting back from an MCL injury,” Jones said. “I’ve got a lot of exercising and prepping for preseason.”

The Greenwood Lady Gator Soccer website proudly announces that senior forward/midfielder Ariel Jones has committed to play this coming fall at Jacksonville State University in Alabama, an NCAA Division 1 soccer program in the Ohio Valley Conference.  Ariel will sign her NCAA National Letter of Intent at an official signing ceremony scheduled to be held at Greenwood High School on Friday, February 6, 2009.  Details concerning the signing ceremony can be obtained by contacting GHS director of athletics Todd Tolbert.

JSU head coach Julie Davis initially offered Ariel an athletic scholarship in December 2007 after watching her play with her Brentwood Real Madrid club team (the 2008 Tennessee State Cup Champions and U.S.Y.S.A. Region 3 Competitors) at the December 2007 Germantown Invitational Tournament in Memphis, Tennessee.  Ariel fielded offers from other colleges including Western Carolina University, the University of Toledo, the University of Alabama, the University of Kentucky, the University of Tennessee, Austin Peay State University, and Western Kentucky University.  After making several college visits, she met with Coach Davis on the JSU campus and verbally committed in April 2008.

KyKicks.com exclusive Q and A

Sacred Heart coach Chris Moore answers questions about his back -to-back state titles.....

Q1: 2 titles in 2 years....how does it feel?

A1 - It is a great feeling of accomplishment to win back to back championships as not many teams have been able to do it in the past.  It was also difficult to repeat because last year we were able to fly under the radar a little, but this season we were the number one team and felt the pressure of defending that title.  I am very proud of how our team handled that pressure!

Q2: What players stood out during the post-season?

A2 - I think what made our team special this year is we had a solid group of players of which several stepped up at various times in our postseason run.  It really took a team effort and a lot of our players have been recognized for their high level of play, however, I think some others need to be recognized for their outstanding contributions.  Players such as Megan Forwith and Erin Feger, our outside mids, for their solid play, as well as players like Margaret Baumann and Kelsey Malyszek who helped anchor in the defense along with Brittany Eisner, Kayla Duffey, and Maddie Peabody.  Additionally, Andrea Distler was an important link for us throughout the season between our defense and offense.

Q3: What did you tell your team before and
after the championship match?

A3 - Before the game we were trying to use the experience factor to keep the girls nerves calm, but we also tried to focus on playing our game and style of soccer.  We also talked with them about being prepared for an all out battle against a very strong Highlands!  After the game  we told the girls we were very proud of their accomplishment and how it took a lot of heart and guts to win the game!

Q4: What can we expect to see when your teams
take the field in 2009?

A4 - In 2009 we will be returning 8 of our 11 starters.  We will have some big shoes to fill in losing our 5 seniors, but we have  a strong group

of underclassmen that we are very excited about.

Q5: Is a 3-peat out of the question for 2009?

A5 - There is going to be a lot of great teams

next year, so I think we will just be taking it one game at a time and hope to return to the final four!

Greenwood Denies Lady Marshals Return Trip To State Final Four
DRAFFENVILLE, KY - Greenwood scored in overtime to pull out a 3-2 victory over host Marshall County on Wednesday night to end the Lady Marshals’ hopes of a return trip to the Girls’ State Soccer Tournament semifinals. Marshall finishes 17-4-2 with the Sectional Final loss. Greenwood has been Marshall’s nemesis, winning five straight sectionals against the Lady Marshals before Marshall broke through last season. Marshall took a 1-0 lead on Margaret Thomas’ early goal. Greenwood went up 2-1 before Marshall tied it on an own-goal with about seven minutes left in regulation. No one scored in the first 10-minute overtime but Greenwood got the game-winner about midway through the second overtime. (Posted 9:22 p.m. by Kevin Stewart)

Lady Marshals Reach Elite Eight With Soccer Win
DRAFFENVILLE, KY - Marshall County advances to the final eight teams in state tournament soccer play after defeating visiting University Heights Academy 1-0 on Monday night in Sub-Section 1 play. Marshall will host the Section 1 Final starting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday against Greenwood. Despite dominating the underdog visitors with 29 shots on goal to one shot for the Lady Blazers, the Lady Marshals had difficulty scoring, due in part to at least 10 off-side calls. But with just under 10 minutes to play, Jordan Travis found Fehrenbacher for the game-winner. (Posted 7:52 p.m. by Kevin Stewart)

E'town defense to face tough task in first round of State

By NATHANIEL BRYAN
nbryan@thenewsenterprise.com
ELIZABETHTOWN — The offense for the Elizabethtown Lady Panthers, as of late, has been inconsistent at best.

Fortunately for them, their defense has been solid and that’s huge, because their toughest task of the season lies tonight.

When the 10th-ranked Lady Panthers (15-7-2) make their eighth consecutive KHSAA Girls’ Soccer State Tournament sweet 16 appearance at 6 tonight at Doug Smith Memorial Stadium, on the other side of the ball will be the second-ranked Louisville DuPont Manual Lady Crimsons (17-1-2).

The Elizabethtown-DuPont Manual winner will host top-ranked Louisville Sacred Heart (18-1-3) or seventh-ranked South Oldham (17-4-3) in the elite eight on Wednesday with a trip to Georgetown for the final four on the line.

Elizabethtown enters tonight with just 53 goals on the season, by far the fewest in the seven-year tenure of coach Rob Zoeller. The Lady Panthers’ next-worst offensive season was 2004, when they played three more games but scored 25 more goals.

In their last 10 matches, the Lady Panthers have scored three goals three times and have been held to one or shut out the remaining seven.

“If one of us are struggling, the other knows to pick them up and motivate them,” Elizabethtown junior defender Ashley Valentine said during a break in practice Sunday afternoon. “Hopefully both our offense and defense will be on against Manual.”

That’s easier said than done.

The Lady Crimsons’ only loss was a 1-0 setback at cross-town rival Louisville Assumption on Sept. 10. Since the Assumption game, which was the Lady Crimsons’ only offense shutout of the year, DuPont Manual has gone on a scoring binge. The Lady Crimsons have scored 61 goals – which are more than Elizabethtown has scored all season – in their last 10 matches alone.

But not many defenses have played better than Elizabethtown’s has as of late. Since a 2-1 home loss to DuPont Manual on Oct. 1, the Lady Panthers have given up just one goal in more than 510 minutes of action.

“It’s a nice challenge. We’d love another chance to prove ourselves against them and I think it’s going to be a good game,” said Elizabethtown senior goalkeeper Terra Lucas, who has 10 shutouts this season.

DuPont Manual’s foursome of senior center midfielders Libby Marsh and Kelsey Dimar and sophomore forwards Emma Brown and Casey Whitfield don’t have much more to prove offensively. Brown (27 goals, 12 assists) and Whitfield (22 goals, 11 assists) both scored in the teams’ regular-season meeting. Marsh (15 assists, six goals) has more assists than any Elizabethtown played does, while Dimar (13 goals) has more goals than any Lady Panther.

Whitfield had three goals in the Lady Crimsons’ 8-1 rout of Louisville Mercy in the 6th Region Tournament championship game last week, while Dimar had two goals and one assist.

With the powerhouse Javanon club in Louisville, Zoeller coached Dimar and Marsh during their sophomore and junior seasons.

“They’re both very, very tough in the middle and they’re both great girls. Libby was one of my absolute favorite girls to coach.”

Zoeller said youth hasn’t stopped Brown and Whitfield for excelling on a top team against a tough schedule.

“For sophomores, they’re both phenomenal. They both have some pace to them,” he said. “Emma is a little craftier, but Whitfield is a workhorse.

“They have a tough handful to deal with, but we dealt with them last year,” said Zoeller, referring to the Lady Panthers’ state tournament win last year against the Lady Crimsons in Louisville. “This is basically the same team minus two or three Division-I players, but this year’s team might have better chemistry, so we’re going to have our hands full.”

Having their hands full with the Lady Crimsons is far from anything new.

The teams have met every year since 2002. Elizabethtown has won six of those 11 meetings, but the Lady Panthers have lost five of six matches since October 2005.

All but three of the meetings have been decided by only one goal.

“Since I’ve been here, it’s been a good rivalry so to speak, even though they’re in Louisville and we’re here in E’town,” said Elizabethtown center midfielder Caitlin Adams. “We know that if we’re going to win, we have to play our ‘A’ game. We always look forward to playing them. It’s circled on our calendar.”
