The Colonels, which remain unbeaten in

honors as the Cards climb to No. 7 in the Soccer America poll
|
Louisville, Ky. - Two
Louisville men's soccer players were honored this week after the Cardinals
pulled a 2-1 upset of No. 2 St. John's on Saturday evening. Freshman
Colin Rolfe was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week and senior
John Jonke was named to the College Soccer News Team of the Week.
Rolfe becomes the second cardinal
player to earn BIG EAST Rookie of the Week honors. Rolfe had a hand in both
goals that helped the Cardinals pull off the upset. Rolfe scored the
equalizer on a header in the 50th minute and in the 57th minute, the
freshman headed the ball to defender
John Jonke, who scored the game-winner. Rolfe leads the team in scoring
with four goals and one assist for nine points.
Jonke scored the game-winning goal
against the Red Storm. Rolfe headed the ball into the middle and Jonke rose
above everyone to put the ball in the net in the 57th minute. Jonke also
helped the Cardinal defense keep the Red Storm out of the net in the final
minutes of the match to seal the victory. It was the second game-winning
goal for Jonke this season.
Louisville also earned its highest ranking in school
history this week. The Cardinals are ranked No. 7 in this week's Soccer
America poll. Louisville is also ranked No. 8 by College Soccer News and No.

Soccer Drops 3-2
Heartbreaker to 13th Ranked Florida
Lexington, Ky. - The Kentucky women's soccer team (3-7-2, 1-2-1)
grabbed a 2-0 first half lead, but was unable to hold on, dropping a 3-2
double-overtime heartbreaker to the 13th ranked Florida Gators (9-2-1,
4-0-0).
After battling back from a two-goal deficit, the Gators forced the game
into overtime where neither team was able to scratch a goal. However, with
7:33 left in the second overtime, Florida's Lindsay Thompson broke free from
the UK defense and fired the game-winner from 15 yards out that snuck
between a diving
Sydney Hiance and the right post.
"We got lackadaisical in the most important part of the game, in
overtime," said UK head coach
Warren Lipka. "You can't rest for one second in overtime and expect to
win."
UK grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the eighth minute on a perfectly executed
corner kick.
Kristin Kover sent a kick towards the back post where
Kate Hughes was there to finish with a header and her first goal of the
season.
Kristin Kover and
Nicola Holdsworth put on a passing clinic in the 38th minute, resulting
in a 2-0 Wildcat lead and
Giuleana Lopez's second goal of the season.
Kristin Kover pushed the ball down the middle of the field and sent a
pass over to
Nicola Holdsworth on the right side. Holdsworth settled the ball and
crossed it across the field to a wide open Lopez who controlled the ball,
dribbled in a couple feet and ripped the shot to the upper right 90 of the
goal for the score.
The Gator picked things up offensively in the second half particular in a
brief 1:17 span when they tied the game. Florida cut the lead in half when
Tahnai Annis took advantage of confusion by the UK defense and chipped a
shot over the heads of the retreating Wildcat defenders and an advancing
Hiance. Just over a minute later, Nicky Kit took a crossing pass from Ameera
Abdullah and punched it home, tying the game at 2-2.
"We executed our plan in the first half, doing what we wanted to do,"
said Lipka. "But in the second half, we had another one of those 20-minute
moments where we thought we were going to win and sat back, but you can't do
that against the 13th ranked team in the country."
Holdsworth had a golden opportunity to end the match with 4:45 left in
the first overtime.
Laura Novikoff dribbled the ball down the right side, split two Gator
defenders and centered a pass right in front of the Florida goal to
Holdsworth. However, Holdsworth couldn't get a solid foot on the ball,
rolling it weakly to Florida goalie Katie Fraine.
Kover paced the Cats' offense with two shots, including one on goal,
while recording two assists. Novikoff and Lopez also managed two shots each.
Kentucky hits the road next weekend for their first conference matches
outside Lexington this season, traveling to Tennessee and Georgia.
Kentucky Soccer
Suffers First Home Loss in Five Games
LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Despite
dominating every statistical category - including a 10-0 advantage in corner
kicks and a 20-9 advantage in total shots, the Kentucky men's soccer team
allowed its first goal in a 394-minute span, suffering a 1-0 defeat at the
hands of the Xavier Musketeers, on a beautiful Saturday afternoon at the UK
Soccer Complex.
Kentucky (5-3-2) suffered its first loss since a
3-1 setback at 24th-ranked Cal Poly on September 7 and lost for the first
time at the UK Soccer Complex since a 2007 defeat to Tulsa, a span of five
matches.
The Wildcats held the edge in shots (20-9) and
corner kicks (10-0), controlling the tempo for the majority of the contest.
UK had not allowed a goal in three consecutive matches, dating back to a
harmless 86th-minute goal in a win over Michigan on September 17.
Dan Williams, the
reigning Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week, made two stellar saves
in the match, including an acrobatic save to thwart a scoring opportunity
seconds before the game-winning goal was delivered. Xavier keeper Adam
Sokolowski totaled four saves, utilizing a solid Musketeer defense to keep
XU in the game throughout.
In a gritty, emotionally-charged contest, Xavier
led the foul count, 16-10 with five total cards being issued by center
referee Josh Brooks. Sophomore midfielder
C.J. Tappel was
giving the first red card handed out to a Wildcat this season in the 82nd
minute and head coach
Ian Collins followed
with a red card seconds later. Collins and Tappel must miss UK's scheduled
game at Tulsa on Wednesday.
Andy Dimbi netted his third goal of the season in
the 81st minute, as Xavier (1-7-1) mounted a challenge in the box, forcing
Williams to leave his position and post an impressive save and spray the
ball back into play. Ryan Gray controlled the ball and moved it to Dimbi,
who netted it home past a scrambling UK defense.

Lindsey Goad and the Lady Toppers remain unbeaten
on the 2008 season. WKU defeated Troy 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at the WKU
Soccer Complex
Bowling Green, Ky. — The Western Kentucky
University soccer team surged past Troy 5-0 — four of the five goals came
in the second half — on Sunday afternoon at the WKU Soccer Complex and
remain unbeaten on the year. The Lady Toppers outshot the Trojans 32-9
over the 90 minutes.
With the victory, WKU advances to 8-0-3 overall and
2-0-2 in Sun Belt Conference action while Troy falls to 6-5-2 on the year
and 1-3 in league play.
"We scored the second goal pretty early in the second
half and I think out team really jumped on that as an opportunity to get
the third one to ice the match," stated head coach
Jason Neidell. "I think we became a lot more aggressive after we
scored the second goal."
Through the first 35 minutes of the match, neither team
had posted a notch on the scoreboard, until
Danielle Hogue opened the flood gates for WKU. Hogue recorded her
first goal of the year off a pass from
Rachel Friedman eight yards from the goal in the 37th minute. The
score marked the only one of the first half.
Kristin Cocchiarella took advantage of a foul on Troy in the
penalty box in the 53rd minute, scoring on a penalty kick. The PK marked
WKU’s fourth attempt on the season.
Katie Walker posted her first goal of the season in the 62nd
minute off a free kick from
Hayley Marsh.
Lindsey Goad scored just four minutes later off a pass from
Kaylyn Pratt to put WKU up 4-0 with 25 minutes of action
remaining. Hogue recorded her second goal of the afternoon off a rebound
that deflected off of Troy’s goalkeeper. Her score came with just 12
minutes left.
Kelsey Meyer and
Amanda Buechel were both credited with assists on the play.
Libby Stout collected her sixth shutout of the year in the WKU
victory. The freshman goalkeeper has yet to allow a loss to her record.
Stout stopped three shot attempts by the Trojans.
"We played really well defensively this afternoon,"
stated Neidell. "We talked about being really stifling defensively before
the match and I thought our defenders really stepped up and put pressure
on their forwards and created a lot a turnovers that could have turned
into dangerous opportunities for them. But because we had so much pressure
on the ball, we were able to win it and play out."
WKU will be in action again next Friday against UALR at
7 p.m. (CDT) in Little Rock, Ark. The Lady Toppers will travel to Arkansas
State on Sunday afternoon with a match against the Redwolves at 1 p.m.
